Important Note

One red flag doesn't always mean you should walk away. But multiple red flags? That's a pattern. Trust your gut - if something feels off, it usually is.

Payment Red Flags

🚩

Asks for free 'test project' or 'trial work'

Why it matters: Professional businesses don't ask for free labor. They evaluate portfolios and references.

🚩

Pressures you to lower your rate significantly

Why it matters: Clients who only care about price will be difficult to satisfy.

🚩

Promises 'future work' or 'exposure' instead of fair pay

Why it matters: Exposure doesn't pay bills. If they value your work, they'll pay for it.

🚩

Unclear about payment terms or delays payment discussions

Why it matters: If they're evasive about money now, you won't get paid easily.

Scope Red Flags

🚩

Vague or constantly changing project scope

Why it matters: Without clear scope, you'll work endlessly for the same price.

Process Red Flags

🚩

Wants to start immediately without discussing terms

Why it matters: Skipping agreements leads to misunderstandings and unpaid work.

Communication Red Flags

🚩

Messages you at all hours expecting instant replies

Why it matters: No boundaries now = no boundaries ever.

Attitude Red Flags

🚩

Bad-mouths previous freelancers

Why it matters: If everyone before you was 'terrible,' you'll be next.

Legal Red Flags

🚩

Won't sign a contract or put terms in writing

Why it matters: Without written terms, you have no protection.

Financial Red Flags

🚩

Asks you to use their software/tools requiring your credit card

Why it matters: You shouldn't be paying to work for someone.

Working Style Red Flags

🚩

Micromanages every tiny detail from the start

Why it matters: This behavior won't improve - it will intensify.

Security Red Flags

🚩

Asks for personal information too early (bank details, SSN, etc.)

Why it matters: Legitimate clients only need this for actual payment processing.
