Why Verbal Agreements Break Down

A professional agreement does not require a lawyer or a formal contract. It requires clarity on four areas: what you will deliver, when you will be paid, how many revisions are included, and how either party can exit.

The Four Pillars of a Safeguard Agreement

1. Scope DefinitionList every deliverable explicitly. If it is not written, it is not included. Use bullet points, file formats, page counts, or word counts to eliminate guessing.
2. Payment StructureState the rate, the due date, and the payment method. For new clients, a 50% deposit before starting is a reasonable professional standard.
3. Revision LimitSpecify how many rounds of feedback are included. Two is a common professional standard. Additional rounds should be billed at your hourly rate.
4. Exit TermsDefine how either party can end the agreement. Typically: written notice of 7 to 14 days, with payment for work completed to date.

When a Client Skips the Agreement

Use this when a client wants to start immediately without any documentation.

"I'm excited to get started as well. I typically send over a brief project summary before we begin so we both have a clear reference point. It takes two minutes to confirm. Can I send that over now?"

When Scope Expands Mid-Project

When a client asks for work outside the original agreement.

"I would be happy to add that. Since it falls outside what we outlined at the start, I will send you a quick note with the additional cost and timeline adjustment. Once confirmed, I will include it in the project."
